– The prettiest tulip fields in Holland –
this is where you want to be
– My yearly trip to the tulip fields –
and it’s always a pleasure
As a young Dutch girl I grew up on a farm, an old tulip farm to be exact. But the thing is, most people think tulips grow everywhere in Holland, but they only grow in certain parts. Growing tulips on our farm wasn’t a big success (it has to do with the soil) so the farmers had to let go of that dream, a long time ago.
Nowadays we still see the tulips in the shutters of our house, even in the stained windows. But apart from a few tulips on our garden, they are nowhere to be found. Tulip season still gets me excited and I always plan my visit early in the season. Because it’s the dreamiest time in Holland.
Even as a Dutch girl, these tulip field views never get old. And each year it’s like they are prettier than the year before. So I can truly imagine that people are willing to travel to Holland from all over the world. And I am here to help you with that.
– This is what you want to know before you book your trip –
so you visit will be unforgettable
A lot of tourists think the entire country is filled with these beautiful fields, just like they think we all ride our bicycles every day and we all walk around on wooden shoes. It’s the typical Dutch views people have in mind, but it’s not the entire truth.
Most tulip fields are located around Amsterdam. It’s what we call ‘de bollenstreek’, and it’s located between Leiden, Lissen, and Haarlem. They are located near the famous botanical gardens ‘Keukenhof’ too. But there is so much more to discover.
If you’re on a road trip or you live nearby (or your keen for a lovely road trip) I highly recommend to skip Lisse and Keukenhof but to drive up to the Noordoostpolder or Zeeland. You’ll have the same pretty views, but without the tourist. But there are no maps for the fields, you’ll just have to good and look for them on your own (or ask some locals, they are always happy to help).
When it comes down to planning your visit, make sure you’ll have a few days to spend in Holland. Tulip season is early in the year so the weather can be quite tricky. We still have a lot of cloudy days (with possible showers throughout the weeks) and the temperatures are still a bit low. Just keep an eye on the weather forecasts to be safe.
– This is where the fields are –
take your pick
Are you just as excited as I am and are you already planning your trip for next year? This is where the most beautiful fields are located in the Netherlands. It’s hard to say when the tulips are in full bloom, it depends on the weather, but mid-April until the beginning of May is mostly a good time to visit. Just keep an eye on Instagram if you want to book a spontaneous trip.
Where are the fields located?
· Keukenhof (botanical garden open: April – May)
· Bollenstreek – from the Oude Rijn west of Leiden until Haarlem)
· Noordoostpolder – around Emmeloord
· Kop van Noord-Holland, here you’ll find the biggest fields (around Schagen and Medemblik)
· Zeeland – around Terneuzen and Hulst
· Goeree-Overflakkee – you’ll find fields across the island
You can visit most of the tulip fields for free. But please do keep in mind that they are owned by local farmers and that they still depend on their flowers when it comes to making a living. It’s forbidden to pick your flowers and for a few years, it’s also forbidden to walk between the flowers too. There where just too many tourists that destroyed too many fields so the farmers had to put a stop to it.
There are a few companies that do allow you to pay a visit to their fields, you can schedule an appointment to take some beautiful pictures. They even allow you to pick your own flowers and to walk through the field. Just ask Google if you’re looking for a perfect match.
P.s. I brought my flowers to the party.
